Friday Night Lights. I already knew the series which I like a lot. Maybe that's why I think the series is better. The music is amazing though, by Explosions in the Sky. I LOVE their sound

I have yet to see it, but I am anxious to as I have heard it is more over the top than something like the Day after Tomorrow. Which would make it a funny movie, because of all the things happening like a 1000 times faster and with greater magnitude than possible.

Still, I want to see it, I'll find some time soon.

The Shawshank Redemption. Yes, I guess I should be embaressed I had never seen it before, other than maybe 5 mins before my dad changed the channel.

My parents actually recently saw it too. My mom loved it, my dad I don't know. If he did like it, it would be a first for a non explosions action filled blowing up shooting kinda movie Razz

Anyway, onto what I think. On IMDB it is ranked #1 of all time, with a 9.1-9.2 rating. Now I haven't seen most of the movies on that top 250 list, but from the ones I have seen I am happy with this choice as #1. I tend to like the drama movies best, but they are trickier for me. If they are not great I generally don't enjoy them, whereas more action filled movies or more...light-hearted ones can be good or even ok and I'd still like em. That said, when a movie like this is great, I do absolutely love em. And I love this above all I have seen. Where most of those movies leave me thinking about it and going 'wow' in my head after it is over, this one did that from the start. I'm really glad I got this, and if my parents hadn't mentioned it to me again, I might not have. It is an old-ish movie (1994), and a little longer than your average 90min (120 with breaks) action movie, thus it's not on Dutch tv much at all.

So if any of you haven't seen it yet, go buy it. I paid €2,50 for it, so don't tell me you think it costs too much so you'd rather download it.

Btw, I am a bit surprised that it got to #1 on IMDB. Cos although for me these kind of movies are the best (I also really like, for instance, Nothing But the Truth and Snow Angels, both from Kate Beckinsale, and a couple others), these are 'slow' movies in which not a lot happens. You know, physically/action-wise. This generally puts off a lot of people. Most people can watch action movies and comedies and that stuff, but with these kind of movies they lose interest because they are waiting for sme action. Apparently with this movie that is not the case.

So, IMO it's worth the 9's it gets. No 10/10 because I never give a 10. Although maybe I should

I went to go watch "2012" at the cinema yesterday, and it was really good. It's not as over the top as people tend to say it is... I mean, these things can really happen. Earth, and every other planet, are powerful, so it's not too far fetched. Obviously the only thing that's a bit "whatever" is that the main characters never seem to get hurt, LOL. Then again, it's like that in every movie, and if they get killed there goes the movie I guess.

Re: What's the last movie you watched?

I have yet to watch it. And of course it's weird the stars don't get hurt. On the other hand, whenever there is a catastrophy, there are some people, one outta a whole lot, that don't get hurt. The movie just happens to follow this person

I really hope it's not as over the top as you say, but I doubt it. They may have things that could happen, but they never happen that quickly. But like I said, I still have to watch it. I have also heard that they hardly include the Mayan calandar, which is a terrible shame. I don't know much about it, but it's very interesting. Of course that aspect is already outdated since the scientists apparently miscalculated and the actual doomsday date is 2208, although the Mayans probably just would have restarted the calandar...

Bas, have you managed to watch "2012" yet? I just watched "The taking of Pelham 123" with John Travolta and Denzel Washington, two of my fave actors. It was better than I expected it to be. I heard from a few friends that it wasn't good, so didn't have high expectations. I'm glad I watched it, and can form my own opinion, lol.

I went to go watch Avatar in 3D at the cinema two weeks ago. At first I didn't want to see it, as it didn't look like my type of film. James Cameron is an excellent director though, and James Horner wrote the score (same duo as for Titanic), so that made me a bit curious. I must admit, I'm glad I watched it - I really enjoyed it. Very different, but a wonderful experience, especially in 3D. Smile

I haven't seen it, I think I'll probably wait til it's on dvd. Of course then it will not be in 3D, but from what I've heard this is a movie where the 3D is just a bonus, and not the thiung that makes the movie great.

Re: What's the last movie you watched?

Yesterday I waatched Whiteout (with Kate Beckinsale) and I just watched Everybody's Fine (with Robert deniro, kate beckinsale, drew barrymore and Sam Rockwell). Whiteout is not a good movie. Kate's acting is solid as always, but the movie itself is one of those hollywoody-ish unrealistic flawed and average action movies that you may enjoy watching once, but if you'll see it again in a month, halfway in the movie you'll be like "Hey, wait. Didn't I see this before sometime?". It's one of those movies that wouldn't have surprised me if they had put poalar bears on Antarctica (thank God they did not). Not memorable at all.
Everybody's Fine on the other hand, is a great movie, which definitely leaves an impression. Although I don't think you would've noticed much if they had replaced the well-known support actors with unknown ones as they only get a few quite basic scenes. It's robert deniro that makes the movie and the movie itself is very well set up with music, storyline and Deniro's acting that combine very well. It's not for those that like fast-paced movies at all, it's quite a 'heavy' movie. But it could bring tears to your eyes if you do enjoy drama movies. It may not maintain this superb quality the entire movie, there may be some scenes that don't add much or that are too dramatical or meaningless, but that's no problem. The quality never drops below good/very good. And what counts for me is the impression it leaves. Although I find now that I'm typing this, that there have been other movies that left an impression for a longer period of time, Everybody's Fine is one that left one of biggest impressions, definitely in a while.

And I think those are pretty much the only movies I've seen since my last post Razz I may watch some movies this weekend, but I'm not sure yet.

I just saw 'Moon'. It reminded me a bit of 2001: A Space Oddysey due to the AI. I quite enjoyed it. I wouldn't say it's a great/excellent movie, but I'd definitely rate it a good/very good

Busy watching the 'Rocky' movies. Strangely enough, I've always wanted to watch them, but never actually got 'round to it for some or other reason. I've watched the first two, and watching the third tomorrow. I'm enjoying it quite a bit.

Serenity AKA Firefly the Movie. Although I think the series is slightly better, this is still one of the best movies. I've said it before and I'll keep repeating it til the day I die: The idiot who decided to cancel the series after running it out of order in the same timeslot as baseball playoff deserves to be in prison

Just watched Buth Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, which is about twice as old as I am. I liked it quite a bit

EDIT: And tonight I watched "Double Indemnity" which is from 1944. I quite liked this one too.

Re: What's the last movie you watched?

Post  Bastiaan on Sun May 23, 2010 11:56 pm

Just watched Stardust, co-starring Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer and Mark Strong (from Sherlock Holmes and Robin Hood, which I have yet to see). It's fantasy, fairy tale fantasy (not LOTR massacre fantasy). The 2 main characters are played by Charlie Cox, who I had not heard of before and Claire Danes, who I only know because she was a guest on Craig Ferguson not too long ago (Feb). But I am confusing her with someone else of who I do not know the name. It kinda bugs me. When I have time I should google and look through all guests in 2010 and figure out who it was.

Anyway, the movie...It's a real fairy tale, an adventure, but it remains quite sweet most of the time. It's not a childed down movie, though. I think the cast is excellent. Of course you have some familiar names, but the two people it's all about: Charlie and Claire, their acting is very good. Charlie is from 1982, so that doesn't surprise me much. Almost all of my favourite actors are from 1982 (especially females, but it works for males too). Claire is from 79, which is also not a bad year at all. I wonder if there's a reason why certain years are better than others. I could write a few hundred words about this coming up with the oddest theories as well as sticking as close to reality as possible. I'll spare you that Razz

Right, back to the movie: All in all I enjoyed it quite a bit. Yes it does have cliches but most of it is well-balanced and well developed. The story is sweet and it would definitely be something many people can relate to. Who hasn't dreamt of this kind of fairy tale adventure? I still do sometimes (hence my fantasy book writing Razz). Yes, some elements of the story are predictable, but then again, if they happened any other way, you'd be disappointed. This is exactly what you want from a 'grown-uppy' fairy tale. What I like about the movie is that it gives an illusion of a grand scale, yet it remains very intimate. No huge battles. Big consequences for thousands of people yes, but our starring couple don't know that. It makes for a very pleasant experience.

I think it's one of those movies I wouldn't mind watching again some time. The cast are very good. The 2 main characters are portrayed very well by the 2 young actors, very believable, and the supporting characters are portrayed by de Niro, Pfeiffer and Strong, who are all just as believable, which I expected from all 3 (de Niro is almost always great, haven't seen much of Pfeiffer before, but she is a huge name and Strong was awesome in Sherlock, but I didn't know that when I started watching. Just thought he looked somewhat familiar Razz)

So if you just want to escape into another world that is not LOTR brutal, has some romance etc in it, Stardust is a good choice.

My next entry will be in a few days I think, when my dvd of Curse of the Ring will arrive. I've already seen it before one time and I loved it. But it won't play properly on my computer (I taped it from tv once) and the only downloadable version I could find has Swedish subs which are too distracting. I prefer no subs at all (no Dutch ones when I'm watching a movie), since it distracts a bit, but there's nothing worse than having subs in a language you don't understand Razz

Anyway, I'm going to buy that from a Dutch version of Ebay along with the dvd Serinity (FIrefly movie). Already seen the 2nd but for a 2 euros, I wouldn't mind owning a non downloaded copy Razz

So in a few days or by the end of the week, a review of Curse of the Ring here. It will most likely be a positive one. And because you are probably thinking (sounds a lot like Lord of the Rings?), lemme explain a tiny bit: It's based on the same Norse (and/or German) saga which Tolkien based his books on: Ring of the Nibelung or something like that. But it is a very different story

Ok, and now it's off to bed Razz

EDIT: It would seem I did in fact see a movie of Claire Danes before: Stage Beauty. I am sure I never downloaded it, so I must've caught it on tv. Though I only turn it on once every few months. Aww well, I remember the movie quite vividly and thought she was very good in it. But as it was late, I didn't bother checking who she was, or I forgot. Funny. I'll try to remember her now Razz

Re: What's the last movie you watched?

Post  Bastiaan on Wed May 26, 2010 11:01 pm

Ok, so I just watched Curse of the Ring, or Ring of the Nibelung or Dark Kingdom: Dragon King or Sword of Xanten. All different titles for the same movie.

Anyway, I liked this movie/mini series (oh all the different version there are...) 4-5 years ago. I liked it a lot. To me, if I remember a movie I've seen more than a month ago, and I remember it for it's good things, then I must've really liked the movie. Often when you rewatch it, you then find out it wasn't as good as you initially thought. Had that a lot with tv shows I used to watch when I was younger. Not this time though, I liked it at least as much as when I saw it a few years ago.

Sure, it's not perfect by any means. The acting has some weak spots, though overall it's decent. The writing could've been better. Special effects are mainly quite to very good. Music is great, it is one of the top points. Of course when Klaus Badelt (from Pirates amongst others) works in the sound department, that's gotta help. Although I don't think he actually composed anything, he was still a part of the score.

None of these not-so-perfect points could be a surprise though, since it did not have a huge budget and wasn't intended to win any Oscars. What IS surprising is the quality when we keep that budget in mind. A 6.6/10 rating on IMDB gives a clue, since many hit movies have trouble reaching that rating. Despite the imperfections, the movie as a whole is very entertaining. It's 3 hours long and I wouldn't mind had it been twice that. It's not even that I need a break after those 3 hours (as I would like with LOTR. Though that movie can be quite intense. No I'm not saying this is better than LOTR, just different). I think the story itself is quite intriguing and not something I've seen before very often. The different aspects, the themes yes, but not in this way.

All in all, this movie is one of my favs, even when I don't consider the budget or the quality it was meant to achieve. I think it's definitely worth a try if you like this kind of movies. It's not Gladiator or LOTR like battles at all, it is much more about love, betrayal, honour. I'm sure you'd be able to find it in the bargain bin for a buck or two. If you find it, buy it. It's worth much more than that. If you do consider it's budget, I'd say it's one of the best low-budget movies out there. As long as you're not trying to spot the results of that low budget everywhere
